YEARBOOKS GO ON SALE MONDAY, JANUARY 30: Don’t forget to order your 2012 Stillwater School yearbook! This year’s design is unique and in full color! Photo pages include special school activities such as; assemblies, 6th grade Washington trip, and  our Halloween parade. The yearbook price is $15.00 each. Our sale starts Monday, January 30 and ends February 10. ORDER NOW AS THERE WILL ONLY BE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF EXTRAS AVAILABLE IN JUNE!

Staff Jeans Day: The staff at Stillwater School wore jeans to work this past Wednesday. They donated money to the Tricky Tray Fund. The Stillwater Education Association will use this money to purchase a “bigger item tray” for the upcoming Tricky Tray that the PTA will be sponsoring. In addition, the staff donated food to a local food pantry. Four big boxes of food were sent to a Stillwater church!

6th Grade Reach:  The 6th grade REACH class recently completed a Marble Maze project. They had to design and construct a maze in which a marble was moved around in a labyrinth maze. The winner was a maze constructed by Quinn Kieslowsky and Justin Campbell. Theirs was the most difficult. It took an average of one minute and eight seconds to complete the maze.

6th Grade Social Studies: As sixth graders have been learning about the ancient Chinese civilization, they celebrated Chinese New Year 2012 with Chinese paper cut dragon art work, and vocabulary lanterns. Julia Al-Nawal, Mrs. Estock, and Abby Ankrom in grade 2, wore their silk Chinese jacket and dresses to make the day more festive. Gung Hay Fat Choy!

2nd Grade News: This January our second graders have been “traveling” from one pole to the other. Did you know the South Pole is in the continent of Antarctica and it’s the coldest place on Earth? Believe it not, penguins are perfectly happy to live there!  It was so interesting to learn about these strange birds. We read and wrote penguin stories, completed penguin crafts and we even researched facts about different kinds of penguins. The second grade was thrilled to adopt a Magellanic penguin!  We named it “Snowball”.  Snowball will be sending us letters and photos throughout the year!  We also took a “trip” to the North Pole.  Although the poles have a lot in common, the Arctic is warmer and there is a lot more wildlife. Each second grader had fun reading and reporting about their favorite arctic animals.  There sure was a lot to learn about! Where we will go next?

Student Council:  On February 3, the Student Council will hold a Super Bowl Day!  Don’t’ forget to wear your favorite football team colors or jerseys. Your football team does not have to be in the Super Bowl to wear their colors.  If you wear your team colors, we are asking for a donation of fifty cents. All of the money that we collect from Super Bowl Day will be donated to the Fredon Animal Shelter to help care for the animals there. Don’t forget to root for your favorite teams and we hope you enjoy Super Bowl Day!

MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY MATH: Several of our fifth grade families joined us once again Tuesday night for our second session of math games and activities. The room was humming while parents and children discussed ways to “Close the Lid” and get four in a row with “Coordinate Tic-Tac-Toe.” Other opening activities included decimal games and a visual-spatial challenge called “Polynominos.” Our families also enjoyed discovering 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-digit palindromes, and using calculators to compete in “Aunt Bebe’s Costly Calculations Contest”. Mr. Blide was the winner of a jar filled with bubble gum by having the closest guess of the actual number inside. An evening of fun activities and delicious snacks was enjoyed by all!

Math-a-thon Update: Did you know that Stillwater School has raised over $85,000 for the children at St. Jude’s over the last few years. If we reach our goal this year we will have donated more than $90,000. Please look for the Funbooks that went home today with the children and thank you!

CAFETERIA NEWS:  You can access MASCHIO’S  website if you have concerns or are in need of product information due to your child’s/children’s allergies to certain foods. We have students arriving to lunch asking us to check ingredients in food that they have ordered that same morning. It is very difficult for us to stop the lunch line at that point to look up this information for students. It also takes away from the time allotted for your children to each their lunch. We do not want to serve your child any food item that may have an ingredient they are allergic to. Therefore, we ask you to please go over the menu items with your child/children prior to the day they will be served. If you have concerns about the items being served, please go to the website www.maschiofood.com and click on “nutrition information” listed in the blue box on the left side of the page. On the next page, down on the bottom right, you can click on a certain food item that you want information for. It will allow you to access the nutrition information label for that item. We thank you in advance for your help concerning this matter. Ellen Van Skiver/Food Service Manager

·         TRICKY TRAY: Planning has already begun for our annual Tricky Tray. This is our biggest event of the year! The proceeds of the Tricky Tray support many programs in our school, including ALL ASSEMBLIES, (2) FAMILY FUN NIGHTS, CULTURAL ARTS NIGHT, and our new event the FATHER/DAUGHTER DANCE. The PTA has also purchased three “Walkie Talkies” for the school to use during fire drills and at recess to ensure the safety of our children. These are just a few examples of how the PTA can put the proceeds of the Tricky Tray to good use. Tricky Tray Planning Meetings have already begun. If you are interested in learning more about this event, or would like to attend one (or more) of the meetings, please contact Amanda Connelly at 973-551-8505, 910raw@gmail.com OR Wendy Kimble at 973-940-1211, wak1016@ptd.net. ·         TRICKY TRAY:  It’s that time again! Green handouts have gone home, and your help is needed. In order to make our annual Tricky Tray a huge success, we are asking for YOUR help! THE FIRST CLASS TO REACH 100% PARTICIPATION WILL RECEIVE A PIZZA PARTY!!  These trays will be purchased by the homeroom parent.  Also...please consider filling out the white paper, which is attached to the green one, and kindly donate a tray. If you do not wish to donate a tray, but would still like to donate in some way, you may make a monetary donation. This donation will be used to purchase a tray in your name. If you wish to make up a tray yourself, please consider a tray geared towards the teen or young adult age group. (We received feedback last year that there weren’t many trays geared towards those age groups) ALL $5.00 DONATIONS AND TRAY INFORMATION IS DUE BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24. As a THANK YOU for donating a family tray, you will receive one free sheet of tickets!  (Limited to one sheet per household and you must be a Stillwater Family.)
