GUIDELINES FOR CLASSROOM PARTIES
1.
Keep it simple.
Parties should provide a small classroom celebration for the children to
augment the curriculum in a fun, meaningful way.
2.
There should be
no more than four “food parties” a year: Halloween, Winter Holiday, Spring, and End of the Year. Thanksgiving is considered part
of the curriculum.
3.
Parties should
generally last about one period, or 40 minutes.
4.
The health and
wellness of our students should be a primary focus when choosing what food to
serve at the parties. Foods and beverages with minimal nutritional value or
that have sugar listed as its first ingredient should be avoided. Healthy foods
could include things like: fruit, vegetables, cheese, pretzels, yogurt, and
raisins. Healthy beverages could include: water, milk, or 100% fruit or
vegetable juices. One appropriately proportioned “sweet item” per party is
recommended.
5.
Food allergies
in the classroom should always be considered when planning a party. This
information can be obtained from the homeroom teacher at the beginning of the
year. Since all children should be able to participate fully in the class
party, food items containing these specific allergens should not be brought to
the party. When possible, food items should be brought in its original
container, listing the food ingredients.
6.
Food donations
are greatly appreciated. Be sure to check with the party organizer in advance,
so “sweet items” are not duplicated.
7.
Goodie bags are not allowed.
8.
Keep crafts
simple. Use recycled materials to avoid purchasing new.
9.
The collection
of money should be avoided. If absolutely necessary, no more than $2 per family
at a time should be requested.
10. Party activities that require movement, strategy, and
teamwork are strongly encouraged. For game ideas, feel free to browse a book
located in the gym office, titled Indoor Action Games for Elementary Children.

2nd Grade: Second graders traveled across the
ocean blue to discover facts about Christopher Columbus. They were amazed to
learn that he had found a new continent by mistake! They thought that he was
very smart to think that the world was round and very brave to journey far
across an ocean the opposite way of other explorers. Earthworms were the topic
of discussions in the second grade classrooms last week. Excited children
performed experiments to see if earthworms were different sizes, if earthworms
like the light or the dark, and do earthworms smell? Along with experimenting
the children learned the parts of an earthworm. They used their knowledge about
the habitat and parts of an earthworm to name an earthworm and write about
where it lives. The week was finished off with the happy release of all the
earthworms back into their natural habitat.
4th Grade: Fourth grade students spent a great
day at the Lakota Wolf Preserve in
5th & 6th grade HANDBELL
Ensemble: Attention all 5th and 6th graders! Would you
like to participate in an exciting musical challenge? If your answer is “yes”
or “maybe,” then you should plan on attending the first meeting/practice
session for Handbells on Monday, 11/7. We will meet
from 3pm-5pm in the music room by the gym. Please remember a bus note. During
this session you will have an opportunity to experiment as well as play handbells. I will also explain all the details of the
program and give you a letter with the dates of the rehearsals as well as a
permission slip to take home. If you decide you want to be in the handbell ensemble, you will need to return the signed
permission slip ASAP because there is a maximum of 18 students for this class.
Sign-up will be on a first come, first served basis. If you have any questions,
please talk to Mrs. Hatch or email me at kay.hatch@stillwaterschool.net.
Camo Spirit Day! The 4th grade will be
holding their next school wide Spirit Day next Wednesday, November 2. This
Spirit Day’s theme will be camo clothing. The 4th
graders will then be using your results to continue their work with bar graphs!
Remember, the class with the most participants gets the “School Spirit” ribbon
hung outside their door for the month. Help your class, and the 4th grade,
and don’t forget your camo on Wednesday!
Shining Star Awards: To promote positive behavior this
school year, staff members are giving “Shining Star” awards to students who are
caught modeling manners. These awards are not given out liberally;
students really have to earn them. The awards are signed by the parents
and then they are hung outside of the cafeteria on the bulletin board.
Congratulations to the students who are already being honored!

THANK YOU: In addition to the Thank You we published last
week for Robin Waldo and the wonderful job she did organizing and running the
Fall Book Fair, we would also like to thank CINDY OLASIN, CHRISSY MENKINS,
WENDY KIMBLE, TINA SUGAR, HELAINE HUMENIK, HEATHER TORKILDSEN, LINDA WILSON AND SYBIL JARETSKY. These wonderful women gave
of their time to volunteer and help Robin run the Book Fair on a daily basis.
Without your help, Ladies, Robin and the PTA would not have been able to offer
the children another wonderful opportunity to purchase the books they love.
·
THANK YOU: Thank you to everyone who donated clothing to
the Fall
·
THANK YOU: The PTA would like to extend a heartfelt THANK
YOU to Trish Hendershot and Sue Grodsky! Trish and
Sue worked many hours in order to make this year’s Halloween Dance/Party a huge
success. They each put in a lot of time and effort so that the children could
enjoy another year of Spooktacular Fun! I am sure
that as they looked around that evening and saw all the smiling faces of the
children in attendance, just their smiles alone were thanks enough.
However, please join me is offering up a great big THANK YOU to them! Also, the
PTA, Trish and Sue would also like to thank all those parents who donated their
time and items so that this event could be a fun time had by all...it could not
have been done without your help.
