Stillwater Township School

September 9, 2011

Dear Parents,

We are off to a wonderful start to our new school year. As always, there is a great deal of enthusiasm amongst students, parents and staff as we all enjoy new beginnings. The school sparkles because of intensive summer maintenance efforts. Teachers and staff are prepared for what we are sure will be a wonderful year.

We are pleased to welcome Christopher Bell, our new assistant principal, to our staff. He comes to us from the Kinnelon Public School District where he served as a 2nd grade teacher. He and his wife Kristin have a one year old son named Braeden. Please feel free to stop by to meet him. He has quickly made the Stillwater School District his new home. I am looking forward to serving the Stillwater community in my new role as Chief School Administrator/Principal.  I will continue to have an open door policy.  Please feel free to share your comments and concerns with me.

A school-wide theme, “Who I Am Makes a Difference” will emphasize character development again this year. It will help children learn behaviors that promote kindness and understanding. We are committed to providing an excellent education in a nurturing environment for our students and continue to stress the role that tolerance plays in reaching this end. Today, more than ever, with the State’s increased emphasis to expect none other than positive interaction amongst peers, accountability for one’s actions is key.

Teachers from our school worked with their colleagues from the Kittatinny sending schools and the Kittatinny middle school faculty to modify the math and language arts curriculum this past year. The programs were reviewed and changes were made to strengthen the course offerings. This revised curriculum will guide instruction this year. The social studies and visual arts curricula will be our focus now as we implement the national standards that were adopted by the state of New Jersey.

Stillwater remains a great place to work and learn. Enthusiastic students, a caring staff and supportive parents and community promote an excellent environment.  I look forward to working with all of you to help our students experience success again this year.

Sincerely,

Anna Memmelaar

Chief School Administrator/Principal

GUIDELINES FOR FIELD TRIP SUPERVISION

Field trips are used as a device for teaching and learning integral to the curriculum, educationally sound, and an important ingredient in the instructional program of the school. A field trip shall be defined as a journey by a group of students away from the school premises under the supervision of a teacher. Student safety must be of prime concern, and adequate supervision must be provided by staff and by other adult chaperones if necessary. The following guidelines have been established for chaperones accompanying a class on their field trip:

·       A chaperone must be a legal guardian of the student.

·       Only one parent/guardian per student as we are limited by the number of seats on the buses.

·       Chaperones are required to ride the bus with the students.

·       The purpose of a parent/guardian attending is to spend quality time with their child; therefore, siblings are not allowed to attend.

·       Prior arrangements must be made if taking your child home following the trip.

·       There is no smoking.

·       Chaperones are asked to adhere to the rules established by the classroom teachers for the trip.

ABSENTEE CALLS

Please call the attendance line 383-3227 when calling your child out of school. Do not use the personal voice mail of our nurse, Maureen Beckman. The nurse’s voice mail should be used for health concerns other than attendance.

School Attendance

Students need to be in school every day to stay on track. Teachers’ lesson plans are carefully constructed to introduce new concepts, reinforce them with learning activities, and then move on to new skills and ideas. When children aren’t in school they can easily fall behind. And the more days they miss, the harder it is to catch up.

THANK YOU!

A great big Thank You to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program for grooming and landscaping our playgrounds and ball fields and to Gene Chammings of LC Service for the use of his equipment and manpower. We appreciate your contribution to making our grounds safe and ready for use at the opening of school.

Safety, Safety, Safety!

Remember to wear or bring sneakers for physical education class. The students will begin each class performing gross motor movements and sneakers are so important for their safety.  ~ Mr. Reed, Miss Radimer, and Mrs. Hayes ~

QSP Magazine Sale

Stillwater School will kick off our QSP Magazine Sale on September 13. Students in grades 4 – 6 will be participating in the sale. We instruct our students not to sell subscriptions by going door to door, but rather to contact family members, have mom and dad take the catalog to work, etc. You will be able to renew your favorite magazines, at a better rate, even if the subscription is not up yet! Your involvement with and support of this drive is greatly appreciated, as proceeds are used to support student activities. Great prizes are awarded to our top sellers! If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Bell. Thank you for your support.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

After-School Schedules: If your child will not be riding the bus home, or not attending K.E.E.P., Camp Iliff, Discovery Years, an after-school program, or just being picked up – a green bus note must be sent in that morning to the homeroom teacher! For students attending K.E.E.P., Camp Iliff, or Discovery Years, or any other activity, on a regularly scheduled basis, you must state that in a letter (preferably on a green bus note) including the details of child’s specific schedule, bus route number, after-school program and day, and a contact for our records. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Sager in the main office.

Girl Scout & Boy Scout Troop Leaders: Please remember to submit a Building Use Form and a meeting schedule for all your meetings to Mrs. Memmelaar. A roster of your complete troop needs to be given to the main office and kept by the sign-out area. On days you are scheduled to meet, you will need to sign your troop out, and be sure to compare your member list with the bus and absentee list. Keep your members lined up in the hallway along the wall at dismissal time (to keep the hallways clear for classes dismissing to the buses), and not in the main office. Be sure to take attendance before the buses leave! Please see Mrs. Sager for additional information.

Signing Students Out: All students who are leaving school must be signed out by a parent/guardian or authorized person. A note to your child’s homeroom teacher must be sent in that morning. If you are picking up a group of students (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, after-school activity etc.) you must either sign each one out, or sign out the whole group and provide the office with a list of those students. Please ensure that all students you are expecting are with you before the buses leave the schoolyard. A bus list is kept in the office for you to double check. If you have any questions, or concerns, please contact Mrs. Sager.
